Financial challenges shouldn’t mean the end of your entrepreneurship journey

Helping entrepreneurs navigate insolvency toward better outcomes.

The problem:

Missing support for startup failures

Understanding your situation

We have finished a successful pilot phase and we are currently fundraising to scale our initiative nationally. This means we are still working hard on developing different toolkits to help entrepreneurs.

Why does
failure
support
matter?

Startups create value for society…

  • Startups and scaleups are responsible for 60% of new employment in the Netherlands

  • Startups contribute 300 billion euros to the Dutch economy

…have social impact…

…but failure is common in innovation

Second time entrepreneurs are more successful:

Learning from failure is one of the key ways entrepreneurs can improve. But of the 96% of Dutch failed entrepreneurs reporting wanting to begin a new venture, only 24% actually do so. Why? Failure has a high financial, emotional and social cost.

The cost of failure is high….

According to research:

In addition to significant debts, founders reported mental health issues including burnouts and depression and in some cases, thoughts of suicide. Feelings of shame for not being able to avert the failure of the business as well as a loss of self-esteem result in self-stigmatisation and withdrawal from social interactions. As a result, entrepreneurs’ network ties and relationships eroded, leaving most with a feeling of loneliness and heightened anxiety and a withdrawal from entrepreneurship entirely.

Our Solution:

1

Workshops:

Workshops about failure for new entrepreneurs delivered through University entrepreneurship programmes or via accelerators/ incubators

2

Mentoring:

Mentoring programme matching entrepreneurs in difficult situations with an experienced founder who has been in a similar situation before

3

Events:

Hosting bi-annual events, and pitching at existing events with ecosystem partners around topics of failure, showcasing stories of entrepreneurs who have restarted

4

Platform:

Digital platform which helps founders to evaluate their personal situation, understand the legal options they have, and guide them through the process

About

About us

It shouldn’t be difficult to understand what options are available to you when your business is in financial trouble. Sadly, not only are the stakes high - declaring bankruptcy can put an end to your entrepreneurial hopes - but the law is confusing and there is little help or support available.

Here at RestartUp, we want to change that.
RestartUp is a collaboration between the Amsterdam Law Hub, Startup Amsterdam, UvA and Gemeente Amsterdam with the goal of supporting business owners in making better financial choices in tough times.

We identify where you are in the insolvency process, what your legal options are, and deliver tailored advice for next steps. Our platform is available for free to anyone, and we don’t ask for any details about you or your business, allowing you to remain anonymous.
